The obituaries are where I learn about new music and find all my favourite new authors. Cheery, I know but bear with me.
I’m currently reading a biography about Leonard Cohen. I was not a fan of Cohen’s music until he died. But I read this New Yorker profile about him and learned what a fascinating life he’d led.
It might seem odd but you can guarantee a dead author will be good if they have an obituary. A newspaper won’t waste space on someone who wrote bad books. It’s how I found Sam Shepherd, Umberto Eco, and Jim Harrison. Between them, they hadn’t written a good new book in years. But they were some of my favourite authors of 2017.
Granted, it’s bittersweet. I know I’m coming to these authors too late. That their best work is years or decades in the past. That history might have revised its fickle opinion on what they wrote. But on the flipside, they can now never write a bad book. They’re never going to disappoint me.
Obituaries have always been a good source of news. People are mistaken to believe they’re sad and melancholic. It’s quite the opposite. Obituaries are a celebration of a life well lived. It’s a sign someone has created something that changed the world in some special way.
When Sam Shepherd died, I spent a morning buying his books second hand on Amazon. My favourite is the one that makes the least sense “The Rolling Thunder Logbook”.
The book chronicles Bob Dylan and Joan Baez’s 1975 tour of the North-East. A tour trailed by a film crew plus Shephard, hired to write the screenplay. Impressionistic and frequently chaotic, legend has it Dylan told Shephard “None of this has to connect; in fact it’s better if it doesn’t connect”.
The exact opposite, in fact, of UX Writing. Sometimes it pays to be contrary.
There are currently 316 of you on this list. “Austin 3:16” was Stone Cold Steve Austin’s catchphrase.
Here we go.

North America
Zendesk are hiring for a UX Writer in San Francisco. If you’re a hiring manager looking for a good UX Writer job description then this is it. It does exactly what it says on the tin.
The Creative Group are looking for a UX Writer in Milpitas, California. Short-term project so would suit a freelancer.
This job ad for a Senior UX Writer in Taylor, Texas has no company attached to it but whoever it is are looking for someone with 10+ years of experience with 5 in HTML and CSS. Whether you’ll be working for anyone is up for debate. Maybe you’re just a lone UX Writer slinging words into the void.
Amazon are hiring a Senior UX Writer on their Advertiser Experience team in Seattle. Would suit a copywriter or marketing writer moving into UX Writing.
Dropbox have another Senior UX Writer on the job boards. Would suit a good generalist with seven years of writing experience (two of those in product writing).
Google are after another UX Writer (will they ever have enough?). It doesn’t say but this is more on the senior end. Four years of experience with mentoring included in the job description.
Europe
Preply are building an online tutoring marketplace and need UX Writer in Kiev. Would suit a copywriter or curriculum designer looking to make the jump.
SpotOn Connections need a Technical Writer with some UX Writing experience in Malta. Experience in online payments a requirement here.
Like Cristiano Ronaldo you could also be making a big money move to Turin. Oval Money need a UX Writer who can write and edit in English and Italian. n.b. it’s unclear if this is a big money move.
Intercom are hiring a Content Design Manager in London or Dublin to wrangle their word wranglers. You’ll get breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. Which sounds like a lovely perk. Unless it’s Soylent every day.
Poq London are looking for a Technical Writer. Some UX Writing in this one plus some great perks (Cake Wednesdays, anyone?).
Lorien are recruiting on behalf of a bank (they don’t say which one) for a UX Writer in London. You’ll have three years of experience for this one.
Twinkl are hiring for a Design Writer in Sheffield. Education experience required here and “at least a C in English and Maths at GCSE”. This is the first time I’ve ever seen a job ad that lists GCSE’s as a requirement.
Remote
Eurekamakers Wellness might sound like an assisted-living home but they’re hiring for a UX Writer to write “kickass copy” for their “Fitness b2c product”. I don’t even know where to begin with this one so I won’t even try. Mix of UX writing and marketing here.
CuddlyNest are looking for a UX Writer for a contract position. Would suit someone on the more junior end as they’re looking for someone with just a year of in-product writing experience.
